Purpose Statement

Throughout the years I've been at The University of Guam I have learned a great deal about the use of technologies and the importance. This portfolio will provide some of the things I have learned and how that technology may be useful and helpful to those individuals with disabilities. I used the word some because I know there are more to explore and discover and new technologies that will be invented in the near future.

Course Description

ED443-Assistive Adaptive Technology is a course I prepared myself to learn more about assistive technology and the many other ways it can be useful and helpful in and out of the schools.  As a future SPED teacher I know their will be a lot of assistive technologies that will be used to help students with disabilities explore new things, learn numerous things in the academic areas and assistive technologies would help these students succeed and head for improvements.  some examples of assistive technologies are telecommunications, computers, and multimedia.  This course helped to explore and understand how assistive technologies can be useful and helpful and to whom are they suited for .

CEC Standard 1: Foundation

Technology being used in the special education classrooms is always a plus.  It helps the students who are in need of alternative ways for learning new things.  Instead of the usual pen and paper there are other technologies that can be substituted for the child's learning.  For example, having a talking calculator with big number and screen can help the students with vision impairment or hearing impairment.  Some high tech technologies are mostly the one that comes as a software that can be installed into the computer and the student can be practicing the activities and become good at it.  Many times the students enjoy more of the computer activities or assignments that pencil and paper.

As a future SPED teacher I would love to have the different techniques that the students can be exploring with and at the same time learning. Though I know that it won't happen that easily, if I had a student in my class who is in need of a certain assistive technology I would go out of my way to make sure that it comes one way or another only because a child's learning shouldn't be put on hold when there is something out there already that can be helpful and useful to this student.

CEC Standard 2 & 3: Developmental and Characteristics of Learners & Individual Learning Differences

Having the many chances to observe students in a classroom has shown me the different types of learners I will encounter when I become a teacher.  There are the ones who are fast and slow learners and even if it may sound simple being able to make sure all the students are learning about the lesson being taught and of course they won't be on the same pace so teachers have to accommodate those students who may need more time, etc.

*CEC Standard 3: Individual Learning Differences

During the experiences in the schools observing I have encountered with different religions, beliefs, etc. I learned throughout my observations and practicums that as a future teacher I should be able to be open to the different backgrounds, etc. I will make sure that if I know what the students beliefs or background is that I will try my best to accommodate the student in his/her assignments and learn about their background because I know that many backgrounds, or beliefs perceive things very differently and I want to treat each student the same way and not hurt any of their feelings or anything of that matter.

CEC Standard 5 & 6: Learning Environments and Social Interactions & Communication

I think that one of the most important grade levels that are in need of most of the technologies is in the elementary level.  I say this because it is always good to start at a young age when teaching a child something.  They will have a lot of time during the years for improvements.  Sometimes during the high school level they differ between the young children in a way that they make decisions on their own and know already what they want to do and what they don't want to do. At the young age they are still wanting to explore numerous things.

* CEC Standard 6: Communication

Technologies that are used for communication are very important especially for those individuals with communication problems such as speech impairment, learning disabilities, or individuals who have MR, TBI, etc.

CEC Standard 7: Instructional Planning

The use of computers in the classroom there are numerous online games that can be fun for the student as well as gaining something out of it. For example, a student with Speech Impairment there are websites that provide great ideas for articulation of different beginning and ending sounds of a word and ideas for teachers to create game boards using cards with different words/vocabularies. There are both printable and online interactive games.  Website: http://www.speechtx.com

Another Website: http://www.bonduel.k12.wi.us/Teacher_pages/Elem/Speech/games.html

Example Activities:

* This is one of the game boards that can be printed out.  All you have to do is make  copies of this board for each student, then make copies of the word "CIRCUS" and cut each letter out and place it in a box or jar big enough for the student to reach in.  The rules are simple, if the student pronounces the word correctly they get to pick one letter out of the box/jar and try and complete the spelling of CIRCUS on their board. [it is almost like bingo]. The teacher just has to come up with words on a card to show the students.  Whoever gets all the letters for CIRCUS wins!

* This other activity can also be found online.  This game is fun because you can blow up the picture on the left [spider web] and have the kids color the insects on the right and cut them individually.  The rules are simple, if the student pronounces the word correctly they get one bug and either place it on the web for the spider to eat or on the flower and to set the insect free.

CEC Standard 8: Assessment

* ED310 Lesson Plan: Parts of a Leaf :

*ACTIVITY:

 picking a leaf and placing under a white sheet of paper and using a crayon to color over the leaf.

* ASSESSMENT:

learning to identify what a leaf looks like and the blades on the leaf.  Students have to draw a line to the leaf that has blades on it. [Blade: the lines in the inner part of the leaf].

Another Assessment:

Teaching the students to always finish up their work/assignments.  All they had to do was finish the student in the pictures work and practice to also finish all their homework, etc.

CEC Standard 9 & 10: Professional and Ethical Practice & Collaboration

Last year I signed up to join a conference which was the Disability Community Conference & Exposition. It took place at Westin Hotel and it was broken down into different areas with presentations such as for transportation, Self Advocacy in the Guam Public Transportation System, Guam Positive Parents Together, Community Support, Disability Benefits, Employment and much more! I was able to sit in a few of the presentations and learned a lot.  One of my friends actually has a dad who is disabled and I was there looking for things I know will help him a lot.  Overall, I enjoyed the conference and got a whole lot of information, brochures, etc. that will be helpful for my friends dad.

* CEC Standard 10: Collaboration

During the spring semester my partner Phil and I made a movie about the different types of technologies we both use as well as what most of our peers use as well.  The movie was actually us showing our mansion[which was the SOE building] and all the different rooms such as, music and computer room, theatre room, etc.  that we created and designed.  Phil used Windows Movie Maker to put all our clips together.  This is our way of showing how technology-savvy we are by using all the technologies we use at home and in school and all were incorporated in this movie.

Reflection

Overall, during the course ED443 I have learned a lot from the presentations my fellow classmates presented as well as myself.  Every single time I would learn something new and try and explore more about it, etc.  Knowing what I know about assistive technology and the different sites that are very useful and FREE I now know that there are more things to find on the web that will be helpful especially in a classroom setting where the students will be excited to explore and learn as well as myself.  I most definitely will be exploring and discovering more on what type of things are out there that will be very much useful and helpful when it comes the time for me to become a teacher.  All I will do now is practice using these helpful websites in a classroom maybe during my practicums as well as presentations for my UOG classes.

Recycling attendance area I created for our Lesson Plan Presentation!

Students have to look for their name on the door on either the can, bottle or paper bag and stick them on the right recycling trash can/bin! This is created to not take up too much time when finding out who is present in class and who are absent! Instead of calling out names one by one, creating fun ideas for attendance is another great option! & those who are absent will still have their cans, bottles, paper bags still sticking on the door!

This is another attendance area I made in about 30-45 minutes. Its a mango tree and each mango has the student's name on it! All they had to do was take their mango and stick it anywhere on the tree!
